Tubeless Setup & Maintenance Guide

Tubeless technology eliminates the traditional inner tube, offering significantly reduced rolling resistance, enhanced cornering traction, increased comfort, and self-healing puncture protection. Proper initial installation and routine maintenance are essential to ensure a reliable, airtight seal on road, gravel, and mountain bike wheelsets.

Follow this step-by-step guide to properly set up, seat, and maintain your tubeless system on VINCI carbon rims.

1. Essential Tubeless Components Checklist

Before beginning installation, ensure you have the following compatible components:

  • Tubeless Tape: High-pressure rim tape in the correct width matching your rim’s internal width (typically 2–3 mm wider than internal rim width).
  • Tubeless Valves: Correct length stem (taller than rim depth) with a removable valve core and a rubber base matching the rim bed profile.
  • Tubeless-Ready (TR / TLR) Tires: Always verify tire compatibility. If using hookless rims, ensure the tire is explicitly approved for hookless installation (refer to our Hookless Rims Guide).
  • Liquid Sealant: High-quality, non-corrosive liquid latex sealant.
  • Installation Tools: Tire levers (plastic only, never metal), valve core tool, and a floor pump, booster pump, or air compressor.

2. Step-by-Step Installation Process

Step 1: Rim Bed Inspection & Taping

Clean the inner rim bed thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol to remove oil, dust, or factory residue. Start taping 10–15 cm past the valve hole, pulling the tape under firm tension without leaving air bubbles or wrinkles. Lap over the valve hole and finish 10–15 cm past it, cutting clean. Use a small pick to pierce a clean round hole through the tape at the valve port.

Step 2: Installing the Tubeless Valve

Insert the tubeless valve through the hole. Firmly press the rubber base down into the rim channel while tightening the knurled locknut by hand on the outer rim side. Do not use pliers or tools to tighten the locknut, as over-tightening can crush the rubber seal or deform the rim channel.

Step 3: Mounting the Tire

Mount one side of the tire bead into the center channel of the rim bed. Mount the second bead, starting opposite the valve and finishing at the valve. Whenever possible, seat beads by hand. If tire levers are strictly necessary, use plastic levers with care to avoid scuffing the carbon rim flange or pinching the tape.

Step 4: Seating the Tire Beads

Remove the valve core to allow maximum airflow. Connect a floor pump, pressure booster, or compressor and inflate rapidly until you hear distinct “pop” sounds, signaling that both tire beads have seated fully onto the rim shoulders. Inspect the tire alignment indicator line around the entire circumference on both sides.

Step 5: Adding Sealant & Final Inflation

Inject the recommended quantity of sealant directly through the valve stem (or unseat a small section of tire bead to pour it in). Reinstall the valve core tightly using a valve tool. Inflate to your target operating pressure (strictly staying within parameters in our Tire Pressure & Width Limits Guide). Rotate and shake the wheel horizontally to distribute sealant evenly along the entire casing and bead interface.

3. Routine Maintenance & Care

  • Replenishing Sealant: Liquid sealant naturally dries out over time (typically 2 to 6 months, depending on ambient temperature and riding frequency). Periodically check fluid levels by shaking the wheel or using a dipstick through the valve stem. Top up as necessary.
  • Valve Core Maintenance: Liquid sealant can clog valve cores over time. Keep spare removable valve cores on hand and replace them if air inflation or
