Hookless Rim Technology
Straight side rim profiles without traditional bead hooks.
What is Hookless Technology?
Hookless rims differ from traditional hooked rims in one key way: they lack the interior “hooked” bead flange that holds the tire bead in place. The primary purpose of this profile design is to improve how the tire seats and opens up on the rim. Hookless rim design standards are officially defined under
ISO 5775-2:2021. You may also see the abbreviation
TSS (Tubeless Straight Side) on tire packaging, which is the official industry term for hookless compatibility.
Due to maximum operational pressure limits, hookless technology initially emerged in mountain biking (MTB). Today, virtually all top-tier MTB wheels and high-end gravel wheels feature hookless rim profiles.
Advantages of Hookless Rims
- Optimized Tire Profile: Hookless flanges create a wider internal rim width compared to an identical exterior hooked rim. This allows wider tires to seat with a more rounded, natural profile, improving side-wall stability and cornering grip. The wider the tire, the greater the benefit.
- Enhanced Structural Strength: VINCI hookless carbon rims are manufactured through a continuous carbon fiber layup process. This eliminates weak stress points at the traditional hook bend, resulting in superior impact resistance.
- Weight Reduction: Eliminating the inner hook bead requires less material, allowing for a slight reduction in overall rim weight.
Disadvantages & Limitations
- Lower Maximum Pressure Limits: While lower max pressure is not a constraint for MTB or gravel, it represents a compromise for high-pressure road setups where aerodynamic efficiency and ultra-low rolling resistance on smooth tarmac are prioritized over comfort.
- Mandatory Hookless Tire Compatibility: Hookless rims strictly require tires certified by their manufacturer for hookless/TSS use. While almost all high-end MTB and gravel tires are now hookless-compatible, pure road tire selection remains more specific.
Tire & Rim Compatibility Guidelines
Gravel & MTB Tires (Widths ≥ 35mm)
For MTB and gravel tires (35mm and wider), compatibility is straightforward. If a tire is marked as
Tubeless Ready (TLR) and the manufacturer does not explicitly state it cannot be used on hookless rims, it is fully compatible.
Note: You are NOT required to run tubeless setups on hookless rims. Hookless rims can safely be used with traditional inner tubes, provided the tire itself is hookless/tubeless certified.
Road Tires
If you intend to run road tires on hookless rims, the tire
MUST explicitly carry the manufacturer’s hookless (TSS) compatibility approval.
Safety Guidelines & VINCI Pressure Limits
When using hookless rims, strictly adhering to the maximum tire pressure limits specified by both the rim and tire manufacturers is mandatory for safety.
While industry standards allow hookless pressure up to 5.0 bar (72.5 PSI), real-world variables such as pressure gauge inaccuracies, temperature increases during riding, or subtle tire manufacturing tolerances can push effective pressures higher.
To ensure maximum safety for our riders, VINCI enforces a strict maximum pressure limit of 4.0 bar (58 PSI) for all VINCI hookless rim models.

VINCI Recommendations: Hooked vs. Hookless
MTB & Race Gravel Wheels: YES to Hookless
For dedicated off-road applications, top-tier performance is achieved with hookless rims. Traditional hooked beads offer no real-world performance advantage in these disciplines. Therefore, our dedicated MTB and Gravel Race wheelsets feature
100% hookless rim profiles.
Road & All-Round Wheels: YES to Hooked
For dedicated road racing and all-round road riding, our extensive testing shows that high-pressure hooked setups with 25-30mm tires (running around 5.5 bar / 80 PSI for a 75kg rider) remain faster and more versatile. Furthermore, road operating pressures sit very close to maximum hookless safety thresholds.
To provide maximum safety, peace of mind, and total versatility without pressure restrictions,
all VINCI road and endurance wheelsets feature traditional hooked rim profiles.
Summary
Safety is our absolute priority. In MTB and gravel cycling, optimal pressures operate far below maximum limits, making hookless technology 100% safe, reliable, and advantageous. On pure road setups, optimal pressures approach safety thresholds, which is why we retain hooked rims for road models.
In short:
Hookless for Gravel & MTB? Absolutely YES. Hookless for Road? Not yet.
