Rim Strike & Bottoming Out – Prevention & Care Guide

With the growing trend toward running lower tire pressures for enhanced traction and comfort, combined with faster racing speeds and increasingly technical terrain, the risk of a rim strike (also known as bottoming out or pinch flatting) has significantly increased in modern road, gravel, and mountain biking.

Understanding what causes a rim strike, how to prevent structural impact damage, and how to handle it if it happens is essential for maintaining the longevity and safety of your carbon wheelset.

1. What is a Rim Strike?

A rim strike occurs when an external impact—such as hitting a sharp rock, pothole, root, or square-edged barrier—compresses the tire completely to the point where the inner surface of the tire casing forcefully hits the rim flange.

Although all VINCI carbon rims are rigorously tested and comply with strict UCI impact resistance standards, extremely severe impacts or running inadequate air pressure can exceed the physical thresholds of carbon fiber, potentially causing localized structural micro-cracks or rim flange damage.

2. Key Factors Contributing to Rim Strikes

  • Under-inflated Tires: Operating below the minimum recommended tire pressure for your rider weight and terrain.
  • Incorrect Tire Width & Volume: Running tires that are too narrow for the rim’s internal width or inappropriate for aggressive terrain.
  • Excessive System Weight: Exceeding total weight limits without adjusting tire pressure accordingly.
  • Unintended High-Speed Line Choices: Hard impacts against sharp obstacles at high speeds without proper unweighting techniques.

3. How to Prevent Rim Strike Damage

A. Maintain Optimal Operational Tire Pressure

Never rely solely on feel or generic pressure recommendations. Regularly check tire pressure using a reliable digital pressure gauge. Always stay within the structural and pneumatic boundaries defined in our Tire Pressure & Width Limits Guide.

B. Respect System Load & Terrain Classifications

Ensure your riding conditions align with your wheelset’s intended category (ASTM Classification) and total system weight limits. Review our Wheel Structural Load Limits and ASTM Classification Guide to verify your configuration.

C. Consider Rim Inserts for Aggressive Off-Road Riding

If you regularly ride technical gravel, singletrack, or rocky MTB trails at lower pressures, installing high-quality tire inserts (foam liners) within a tubeless setup provides an extra cushioning barrier that absorbs heavy impact energy before it reaches the carbon rim wall. For complete setup details, refer to our Tubeless Setup Guide.

D. Develop Sensorial Pressure Awareness

Practice test rides on safe, controlled terrain at slightly varied pressures. Learning to detect subtle tire squirm or premature bottoming resistance helps you identify low-pressure situations early before encountering harsher obstacles.

4. What to Do If an Impact Occurs

If you experience a hard impact or suspect a rim strike during a ride:

  1. Stop Immediately & Inspect: Safely pull over and inspect the entire circumference of both rim flanges, tire sidewalls, and spoke tension.
  2. Check for Visual Damage: Look for delamination, cracking, tire sealant seepage at the bead, or loss of trueness. Do not continue riding on a structurally damaged wheel.
  3. Verify Air Pressure: Ensure the tire has not suffered a sudden drop in pressure that could lead to subsequent impacts.

5. VINCI Crash Replacement Program

We stand behind our engineering quality, but we understand that unexpected trail hazards and crashes happen. If your rim suffers impact damage or structural deformation from a severe rim strike, you are covered by the VINCI Crash Replacement Program.

  • 50% Discount: Receive a 50% discount on a replacement rim and re-building service.
  • Quick Service Turnaround: Our workshop handles wheel disassembly, rim replacement, and precision re-lacing to get you back on the road or trail quickly.
